Flame Resistant TECGEN® Fabric

TECGEN® garments are made from proprietary TECGEN® fire resistant fabric which provides light weight, moisture management and high breathability.

TECGEN® fabric is woven from a blend of fibers with the addition of our own unique fiber. Our unique bi-regional fiber has high heat protection capabilities due to the high density carbonaceous shell. The other region, a viscoelastic core, ensures flexibility and strength are built in at the fiber level. This high performance fiber enables us to create unique blends with other textiles, to achieve enhanced comfort and wearability.

Download Technical Information | FR clothesIn general, flame resistance is created in fabrics by using or applying ingredients that require a high oxygen level in the environment to support ignition.  The goal is to use chemistry to create materials that will not burn in atmospheric conditions.  Some fabrics require as much as 28 percent oxygen present to burn, which is much higher than the 21% found in the air. This is why FR clothing does not continue to burn when the ignition source is removed - it is starved of oxygen. There are currently two categories of garments for daily FR wear, inherent and non-inherent or treated.  Inherency is a term that indicates whether naturally flammable materials are used in the base fabric. Cotton fabric will burn in its natural state.  Making a heavy cotton will just add more fuel to ignite.  Chemicals must be applied to cotton fabric to convert this flammable material to a state that it will self-extinguish.  This fabric is considered not-inherent. Fabric that is manufactured from materials that do not support ignition in their natural state in the atmosphere are considered inherent

When considering which FR clothing to specify, the most important criteria is to match the garment performance with the FR risk level. There are many third party sources available to help understand how and when to conduct a hazard assessment for your working environment.  Once the risk is assessed make sure you choose a garment that will be accepted by your team in their environment.  TECGEN® garments have been adopted successfully in hot environments like those found in South Texas.  A garment that is unzipped, or has the sleeves rolled up can not provide protection for that exposed skin.  Contact us for more information about these results or to set up your own wear trial.
